What is the difference between an Instagram reel and Instagram story?

  • Length: Reels are up to 30 seconds long. These are helpful when you want to share a quick idea. While each story is 15 seconds in length, accounts can share multiple 15-second clips throughout the day – to tell a longer, more detailed subject.
  • Format: Instagram Reels are video only whereas Stories can include still images and posts from the Instagram feed.
  • Captions and Hashtags: On Instagram Reels, you can add a full caption and up to 30 hashtags. On Stories, there is no caption, and hashtags are limited to 10 per Story.
  • Engagement: Like feed posts, users can publicly comment on Reels, which is great for engagement. On Instagram Stories, engagement comes in the form of direct messaging.
  • Lifespan: Unlike Instagram Stories, Reels do not disappear after 24 hours. Instead, they are stored in a dedicated Reels tab on your profile
  • Drafts: Users can create and save draft Reels to publish when they want to.
  • Editing: The Instagram Reels editor has additional features for filming and editing videos – such as the ability to slow down or speed up clips, trim content, and align or “stitch” videos together for smooth transitions
  • Audio focus: Instagram Reels are very much based on music or audio. With Instagram Reels, users can select a music track to use from the library or record their own audio.
  • Placement: Reels can be shared in 3 locations: on your own Reels feed, and on the main Instagram feed and they may also appear on the Explore tab (public accounts only).  Reels can also be shared to the Instagram Stories feed and will expire after 24 hours like any other Story.

Now that you know some differences, let’s proceed.

Making reels is a fun activity that opens the doors of your creativity for your followers. If you make reels then you may also want to highlight them on your profile as your Instagram stories. But, in doing so, there’s a tradeoff.

The duration of a full reel is of 30 seconds but you can upload a video of a max of 15 seconds only as your Instagram story. Your viewers will have to tap on your story to view the full-length reel in the reels section. But why would Instagram do this? Well, this makes sense as directing the users in the reels section to view other reels will boost engagement.

  • Tap the 3-dot icon at the bottom-right corner.
  • Tap “Share to…” and select “Instagram Media Saver” from the Share list.
  • Select Ok when you see the banner. Choose the necessary permissions by choosing “Always Allow”.
  • The reels video will be saved to your Photos app. Now open your Instagram app and select this video to post as your Instagram story.
  • Add any effects, stickers, or text you want to include in your Instagram story.
